When I took the job as Caretaker for Santiago Apartments in August, 2011, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I was 24, naive, and barely knew how to change a light bulb. In the years since, I have learned how to operate a low-pressure steam boiler, handed keys to countless new renters, and grown strangely fond of this nearly 100-year-old building.
After nine + years, it’s time for me to hand the reins to a new Caretaker, who, I am confident, will bring new energy and excitement to this community.
Although this job came with more than it’s fair share of stresses, Santiago Apartments will always have a special place in my heart. I hope that every resident who moves in and out of this building after I’m gone appreciates it as much as I do, flaws and all.
